CON CHELLIS ANNOUNCES CAMPAIGN FOR SUMMERVILLE TOWN COUNCIL

Small business owner Con Chellis announced his campaign for Summerville Town Council District 3 seat.

The seat will become vacant and trigger a special election when Mayor-Elect Russ Touchberry is sworn in as the town's next mayor. The special election date is expected to occur on April 2, 2024.

Chellis is a former member of Dorchester County Council and a representative in the South Carolina House of Representatives. In 2020, Chellis decided not to seek re-election to spend more time with his family.

“This is an all-hands-on-deck moment for our town. We need leadership to protect our quality of life. We have big issues ahead of us - and I feel I can be valuable in helping get local, regional, and state officials to bring immediate results to our traffic issues and put an end to reckless overdevelopment,” Chellis said.

“The issues of the most importance to our area are ones that can be addressed by Town Council. Summerville is a great place to live, but we are at a moment where we need to usher in a new generation of leadership to protect the quality of life we enjoy. This is not a moment we can sit on the sidelines,” Chellis added.

Chellis laid out his priorities for the Town and District 3:

  • Work with the mayor to help leverage my relationships in the State House and regionally to move traffic solutions forward without furthering tax burdens on our citizens

  • Continue downtown Summerville improvements to make it more vibrant, more pedestrian-friendly, more accessible for bicycles and golf carts, and to prioritize parking solutions

  • Work with local officials and nonprofits to help with the growing homeless population

  • Utilize my extensive knowledge of our state’s tax system to create revenue streams for our town without further burdening our residents and businesses

Chellis served as a Dorchester County Councilman from 2017 to 2018 and in the State House from 2018 to 2020. In the State House, he served on the Tax Reform Committee, and while on County Council, he spearheaded a reform of business license fees, lowering fees for our small businesses.

Chellis owns the Chellis Agency, LLC, an Allstate insurance company in Summerville. He is also a past president and treasurer of the Summerville Exchange Club. He is a past board member of the Greater Summerville Chamber of Commerce and a past member of the Summerville Rotary Club. Con has heavily invested in organizations, contributing generously to our local non-profits over the years. He is a graduate of Summerville High School and East Tennessee State University.

Chellis is married to Dr. Tara Chellis, also a small business owner and chiropractor, and they have three children. The family attends Bethany United Methodist Church, where Chellis is a lifetime member.
